Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge was originally built for Kenneth Kaunda, the first Zambian president, in the 1970s. This historic property was recently carefully restored to maintain the original colonial style. A majestic arched entrance leads you into a huge colonial-style lounge and outside the grand dining room, a long veranda stretches with views down the valley to the Luangwa River. The main area features a comfortable lounge, intimate fireplace and bar area. The lodge’s unique and spectacular hilltop position in the South Luangwa affords incredible views over the lush valley below, stretching as far as the Luangwa River.
Each of the ten suites comes complete with a four-poster bed, air conditioning, luxurious bathroom and private veranda. In keeping with the rest of Sanctuary Chichele, the suites are decorated in an understated style that harks back to the lodge’s past as a presidential retreat.
Between activities you can relax in the swimming pool or on the veranda that stretches in front of the lodge. Wherever you are there are incredible views and great game viewing opportunities. Game often wanders through the lush green gardens including zebra, puku and even leopard in the evening. We have been dining on the verandah and seen a leopard drinking from the swimming pool!
